Iron Tower

$200.00
Sold Out

This archival, hand-sewn journal/sketchbook is made from 100 gsm, white Hahnemühle Ingres mouldmade paper from Dassel, Germany since 1584, sewn with Irish linen thread in the linked pattern that was developed by the ancient Copts. This stitch allows the book to lay open easily at any page.

This book’s endbands are blue and white linen, and its bookmark is goatskin.  Its boards are wrapped in a 1954 blueprint from the Kyger Creek Power Station in Cheshire, Ohio, and its spine is covered in Alran French goatskin that was processed at Rocky Mountain Leather Supply in Utah.  (A note about blueprint paper: it is printed by exposure to light, so prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light will fade it significantly; it if is briefly exposed to sunlight, it will most likely recover with a period of storage in a dark place.)

The talisman in this book is an 1889 souvenir watch fob from the Paris Exposition Universelle, the World’s Fair for which the Eiffel Tower was erected.  At the time, The Eiffel Tower was the tallest building in the world, and its structure was meant to showcase the best engineering in the world and the viability of iron as a building material for skyscrapers.  Today, it is as quaint as the pocket watch to which this fob would have been attached—a real marvel, given the state of engineering in its day.

Includes custom slipcase
